The Engineer (Offensive Coordinator)
The racecar engineer is a very important part of any team.
They are kind of like an offensive coordinator in football. When
a team goes testing, the engineer comes up with a game plan
for what exact setup adjustments will be made throughout the
test day or practice session. It is also the job of the engineer to
analyze the data and performance of the whole car once a
session is complete. This is much like when an offensive
coordinator looks at film or pictures during a game. Once the
engineer has understood what the car’s performance was,
he makes the setup adjustments for the next session.

The best engineers usually have a lot of experience. Sometimes the best
engineer might not even have a college degree in engineering, but has
simply learned through the school of hard knocks and experience. Usually,
the good engineers are the ones that have an understanding of driving a racecar, being a mechanic on a racecar and then also have learned engineering in some way, shape or form.

I have been very fortunate to work with good, if not great engineers,
throughout my career. When you have an engineer who can make
the racecar go fast, then the job of a driver is a whole lot easier.
The car turns in nicely and then holds the corner through the middle,
then you are able to put the power down without interruption on to
the straightaway. This is just like having an offensive coordinator
call good or bad plays. Good players running bad plays will get beat
by decent players running great plays.
