Image Title: Good mechanics treat "their" racecar like their baby

The Mechanic (Offensive Line)
The racecar mechanic is the most overlooked
position by race fans, likely because it does not have
the same glamour involved as does the driver,
engineer and team owner. You could have the best
driver, best engineer and best team owner all under
one tent, but if you do not have good mechanics,
then the car will not go anywhere.

In my opinion, this makes the mechanic the most
important position. They are like your offensive line
in football. They do a lot of the grunt work. They load
and unload the transporter at every event and then
setup everything that you see at the track. Having
good mechanics makes everyone’s job much easier,
as it takes the worry that the car might break, away.

Good mechanics treat “their” racecar like their baby. Everything is
clean and neatly done. The quickest way to recognize a good
mechanic's work is by looking at their electrical work. There are
wires running all over the place on a racecar, so having them in
order and out of the way of other important parts is essential.
They also keep their cars sparkling clean.

One of my first contacts in racing, as a kid, was a mechanic and outside rear tire
changer on Rick Mears’ IndyCar in the 1980’s. I still talk to him today. As a driver, it is important to get to know your mechanics, as they are the ones that you have to trust
with your life. When a mechanic takes a liking to a driver and believes in his driver to
take care of “his” car, then he will work that much harder to make sure that everything
is in good shape.
