  1. Are there cup holders in racecars?

There are no cup holders in racecars. Your helmet covers your face and is strapped tight so it is not easy to take it off to get a drink. A driver will usually drink lots of water beforehand to compensate. In a recent test in 95 degree heat, I lost 6 pounds over one full day of testing. Most of it was water weight.

  1. Do racecars have music radios or players?

There are no music radios or CD players in racecars or anywhere to hook up an iPod. This type of thing would actually take your much needed focus away. This is also true in your street car. Distractions cause accidents!

  1. Do racers eat while racing?

I do not eat while driving my racecar. Eating is very important, but is done prior to the race.

  1. Are there water dispensers in racecars?

There is a water dispenser in some racecars, but not in my Firestone Indy Lights racecar. It depends on the length of the race. Water dispensers are common in endurance sports cars and Indy Cars.

  1. Is driving a racecar scary?

Yes, driving racecars can be very scary. Usually you find that fear after an accident as there is very little time between when you have something go wrong and when you hit the wall. On an oval from mishap to impact could be way less than a half-second. That is not much time to think about anything except protecting yourself.

  1. Is it hot in a racecar?

It is very hot is a racecar. On hot days, it can be up over 125 degrees Fahrenheit in the driver's seat. Sports cars with no windows can be even hotter. Some drivers use cool suits that circulate cold water through a series of tubes. Cool suits are worn like a tee-shirt. Cool suits are used in sports car racing.

  1. How does the racer talk to the team while racing?

At most all top level race series, drivers are required to have radios that communicate with the team. In Indy Car, the series provides drivers with ear plugs that have tiny speakers in them. They are molded to each driver's ears for comfort and also to block out engine noise, protecting your hearing for when you are older.
