The Chatham school system is one of
the best in New Jersey. The education that I received
there was top notch and that showed when I went to
college. I did fairly well going through grade school.
I was not the smartest kid, but certainly not the one with
the lowest grades.
When I got to high school, my motivation dropped
considerably and my grades showed it. Now that I am
older, I wish that I had done better in high school, as
it is the core and their that you learn the most basic concepts that you need to
learn to get through life.
I am probably not a good role model for the way to
handle education. I only did one year of college before
I decided that my calling was racing. As I am sure you
have heard before, “College is not for everyone.”
But education is!
When I left college, I quickly realized that it was
still important to educate myself in some way, shape or
form. I was losing ground and things were not really
progressing in my life. I felt that I needed to learn
about something…anything to keep myself progressing.
Obviously, racing was the first thing I turned to and I
started studying the history of racing and former
driver’s careers and so on.
This quickly turned into studying “real” history and
historical figures like Benjamin Franklin and Theodore
Roosevelt. I also started studying psychology, economics,
business, marketing, sponsorship and promotion and also
military history. What I had realized was that if I
applied what I was learning to racing terms, then I would
pick up the concepts much quicker. This was why college
was not for me. I do not like to learn about things that
I am not interested in. For example, I took Latin for two
years and got a 60.9% average over the two years. Other
subjects I did really well in because I was interested.
To this day, the most important things that I studied
were the lives of important people in history. People
like Benjamin Franklin, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren
Buffet and Charlie Munger (Read
more about them) Also, things like the
psychology of misjudgment and rationality were things
that I wish I had learned back in high school.
Just remember that education is continuous. Education does
not stop just because school has stopped. Please
remember that I encourage people to stay in school.
Dropping out of grade school or high school would have
to be the most foolish thing that could be done as a
kid.
