Emblematic of the partnership between Best Friends and
racecar driver Andrew Prendeville, the two
winners of tickets to next year’s Indianapolis
500 are a race fan and a Best Friends member.
In a drawing held last week, Sue Lerud of Page,
Arizona, and Shea Bishop of Independence,
Kentucky, each won a pair of tickets to the “The
Greatest Spectacle in Sports,” and auto racing’s
most enduring and legendary event.
“Cool! This definitely made my day!” Sue said
when contacted by Best Friends. “We think you’re
a pretty amazing organization.”
Sue, who volunteers with her girlfriends at the
sanctuary, “…thought you were calling for help
with a cat.” She purchased two raffle tickets to
support the racing partnership.
Shea is a race fan who bought her ticket while
at the IndyCar races in Sparta, Kentucky, the
weekend of Aug. 11, 2007.
Because she was not a member of Best Friends,
Shea serves as an example of what the
partnership was intended to do – promote Best
Friends and its mission to people who might
otherwise never hear about us.
Andrew, who drove his Best Friends #5 car in the
Indy Pro Series circuit, donated space on his
car for our logo and devised a fund-raising
program called “Racing Laps for Best Friends.”
The promotion encouraged animal lovers and race
fans to pledge a nominal amount – as low as 25
cents – for each lap he completed in an
individual race or throughout the season.
Andrew and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
donated the tickets to help support Best
Friends. Coincidentally (or not), the biggest
donor to Racing Laps was Mari Hulman George,
chairwoman of the speedway and a Best Friends
member.
So obviously Sue and Shea are getting good
seats. In fact, theyll be sitting in the lower
level of the Paddock Grandstand, which provides
a front and center view of the Start/Finish
line.
The raffle raised $4380 for the animals at Best
Friends. Overall, Andrew raised more than
$52,000 last season.
The drawing was held Sept. 28, 2007, in our
member relations department at the sanctuary.
Cindy Sharkey drew the two winning entries from
a large can sporting photos of Andrew and the
Best Friends #5 car.
Sue may not be a big racing fan, but her husband
most definitely is. He spent a month in Daytona
last year watching races. Next year, it looks
like its going to be Indianapolis. And there
will be one other difference.
“This time,” Sue says, “I’m going along.” |
