LAS VEGAS, July 1
- Fans can get involved in the excitement of two
Firestone Indy Lights races in a single day and
simultaneously help a great cause Saturday
through Andrew Prendeville's Racing Laps for
Best Friends program as highlighted on the
racinglapsforbestfriends.com website.
For the first time ever the series will stage
two races on one day when the Corning Duels are
held Saturday at 11:15 a.m. and 3:20 p.m. at
Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y.
Both events are slated to be 29 laps long.
That's important, because fans make pledges to
the not-for-profit Best Friends Animal Society
based on the number of laps Prendeville
completes in all of the Firestone Indy Lights
races in his Best Friends Animal Society No. 5.
Per-lap donations are accepted in any amount
starting at 25 cents. Payments are made safely
on-line through credit cards. All of the
proceeds go directly to Best Friends.
Should a fan pledge $1 per lap for both races
and Prendeville finishes all the laps possible
on Saturday, the fan will make a $58 donation to
Best Friends at the end of the day.
Prendeville finished all the laps in the
doubleheader at the Glen last year, although
those races were held on separate days. The Las
Vegas-based driver, a New Jersey native,
finished in the top 10 in both events.
Fans can also purchase raffle tickets to benefit
Best Friends on the racinglapsforbestfriends.com
website. The prizes are sessions at the famous
Bertil Roos Racing School.
Practice sessions will be held at 9 a.m. and 1
p.m. on Friday before SWE Qualifying at 5 p.m.
that day sets the starting line-up for the first
race.
Then the pressure mounts even higher. It will be
very important for Prendeville to avoid being
involved in a crash in the first race on
Saturday morning. Although his RLR/Andersen
Racing pit crew is excellent, if Prendeville is
involved in an accident they might not have
enough time to repair his car before the second
race gets the green flag at 3:20 p.m.
The starting line-up for the second race will be
determined by the finishing order of the first
race, although several positions at the top of
the field may be inverted.
Live timing and scoring and Webcast coverage
will be available on indycar.com. ESPN2 will
tape both races for broadcast at 2 p.m. Eastern
time on Thursday, July 10.
Saturday's doubleheader begins a particularly
busy span for the series, as there are five
races scheduled within 15 days in three
different states. After the Glen the circuit
moves to Nashville Superspeedway on July 12,
followed by another doubleheader at the Mid-Ohio
Sports Car Course July 19-20.
Best Friends is one of the most respected animal
welfare groups in the world. It cares for some
1,500 animals on any given day at its sanctuary
in Kanab, Utah.
Those animals include 22 of the dogs formerly
owned by NFL player Michael Vick, and a dog
named Ballsy that was rescued following
Hurricane Katrina. Prendeville sponsors the
latter animal via Best Friends' Web site at
bestfriends.org. Details of Ballsy's
rehabilitation can be obtained through a blog
Prendeville writes on
racinglapsforbestfriends.com. Ballsy was also
the inspiration for the Racing Laps for Best
Friends logo found on Prendeville's race car.
Tickets for a raffle featuring prizes of
sessions at the Bertil Roos Racing School may
also be obtained through the
racinglapsforbestfriends.com
website.
